The vineyard Brothers-in-law is one of the most prestigious and respected estates in Oregon, located in the heart of the appellation Ribbon Ridge AVA, a sub-region of the Willamette Valley famous for its ancient sedimentary soils.
Founded in 1986 by Michael Etzel (with financial assistance from his brother-in-law, the renowned critic Robert Parker), the domaine played a crucial role in the global recognition of Oregon Pinot Noir.
An Exceptional Terroir: Ribbon Ridge
THE domaine extends over approximately 35 hectares, of which 12 hectares are planted with vines on a ridge of hills.
-
The Soil (Willakenzie): These are very old, fine, and well-drained marine sedimentary soils. This terroir gives the wines an elegant tannic structure and characteristic notes of black fruits, ofspices and minerality (graphite).
-
The Exhibition: The vines are mainly oriented towards the south and southeast, on gentle slopes that maximize sunshine while benefiting from the cool Pacific breezes in the evening.
-
Altitude: Varying between 120 and 200 meters, the altitude helps to maintain a lively natural acidity, essential for the balance of Pinot Noir.
The Two Emblematic Plots
THE domaine is divided into two main sections, each producing a distinct wine:
-
The Original Vineyard (Beaux Frères Vineyard): Planted between 1988 and 1995 with self-rooted clones (Pommard and Wädenswil). This is the historical heart of the domaine. The wines there are generally opulent, dense, and profound.
-
The Upper Terrace: Planted in 2000 at a higher altitude with Dijon clones. This plot produces more airy, floral and of great aromatic finesse.
Philosophy and Culture
Beaux Frères stands out for its very nature-oriented approach, well before it became a global trend:
-
Organic and Biodynamic Agriculture: THE domaine It has been cultivated without synthetic pesticides or herbicides from the beginning. The balance of the ecosystem (use of compost, respect for biodiversity) is an absolute priority.
-
Vieilles Vignes : With vines now exceeding 35 years old, the root system is deeply anchored, allowing for consistent quality even in climatically challenging vintages.
-
Low Yields: Strict pruning and bud removal are used to limit production per vine and promote maximum aroma concentration.
The "Brothers-in-Law" Style
The style of the house is often described as a bridge between Burgundy and California:
"Controlled power combined with timeless elegance."
The wines are not neither glued nor filteredThis gives them a fleshy, almost textured character and exceptional aging potential (often 20 years or more). They avoid excessive use of new oak to allow the purity of the fruit and the complexity of the Ribbon Ridge soil to shine through.
The Beaux Frères estate is now jointly owned by Michael G. Etzel and Artemis Domaines, adding a unique Oregon terroir to a group of world-renowned estates including Château Latour, Domaine Eugenie's, Clos of Tart, Château-Grillet, Champagne Jacquesson and Bouchard Père et Fils in France, as well as the Eisele vineyard in Napa. Thanks to this evolution, the heart of Beaux Frères' winemaking traditions, forged over decades, is returning to its roots.
