      Château Le Gay

      The History of the Estate

Le Gay Castleit originates from an 18th-century property: theGay ManorFor inheritance reasons, the Manoir de Gay estate is divided between theChâteau Lafleurand theGay CastleThese two new properties pass by inheritance toThe Robin Maidens(Marie and Thérèse), who entrusted its management toMoueix establishmentsThe Moueix family is none other than the owner of the neighboring estate, the prestigiousPetrusHaving little interest in fame, the Robin sisters allowed their Château to remain in Petrus's shadow. Finally, following Thérèse's death and Marie's placement under guardianship,The Gayfinds itself deprived of its best plots, now attached to the vineyard ofChâteau Lafleur-PetrusThen, in order to pay the inheritance taxes to keep Château Lafleur, the heirs of the Robin sisters,Jacques and Sylvie Guinaudeaudecide to part ways with De Gay.Catherine Péré-Vergéwill acquire it in 2002.

      The Lady of Pomerol

      Catherine Péré-Vergé

Château Le Gay earned its prestigious reputation thanks to the tireless work of Catherine Péré-Vergé. She is known asThe Lady of PomerolCatherine Péré-Vergé was born in 1939 and passed away in 2013. She was among those who revolutionized the great wines of Bordeaux during the 1990s. Her most remarkable achievement? She was the only woman! Nevertheless, this never prevented her from bringing out the full potential of her various properties. Her inheritance from the Cristalleries d'Arques allowed her to acquire Château Montviel in 1985, followed by Château Le Gay in 2002. Today, Vignobles Péré-Vergé also includes Château la Violette and Château Tristan in the Pomerol region, as well as Château La Gravière and Moulin La Gravière. For all her properties, Catherine Péré-Vergé followed the same guiding principle, convinced that perfection is nothing more than the sum of precise details. Her advisor, the oenologist Michel Rolland, shared this philosophy with her.

      Le Gay wines

      The Pomerol expression

The Château Le Gay vineyard covers 10.5 hectares. It is planted primarily with Merlot (90%), which brings finesse and body, and Cabernet Franc (10%), which contributes roundness, suppleness, and fruit. Its proximity to estates such as Château Lafleur and Petrus attests to a terroir of exceptional quality. Indeed, its flagship grape variety, Merlot, thrives in clay-gravel soil and benefits from perfect exposure on the Pomerol plateau. In addition to the exceptional terroir, the finesse of Château Le Gay wines stems from meticulous work carried out both in the vineyard and beyond. With this in mind, the winery was completely rebuilt in 2003, and further renovations in 2014 enabled the microvinification of 100% of the grapes in new oak barrels. This is a first in Pomerol! Château Le Gay also produces a second wine, the “Manoir de Gay”.
