The 2019 Kanonkop Pinotage Stellenbosch displays a deep, intense ruby color. On the nose, it offers a complex bouquet of ripe black fruit, sweet spices, and subtle notes of leather. On the palate, this red wine is full-bodied and structured, with silky tannins and lovely freshness. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a rich and elegant aromatic impression.

The Kanonkop vineyard extends across well-exposed slopes of Stellenbosch, benefiting from a climat The warm, dry Mediterranean climate is ideal for optimal grape ripening. The terroir is composed of decomposed granite soils, offering excellent drainage and a mineral richness that contributes to the complexity and concentration of the wines. The vines are cultivated with care and respect for the environment to preserve the quality and authenticity of the terroir. The average age of the vines is 25 years, resulting in high-quality grapes with optimal aromatic concentration. Specific viticultural practices are not disclosed.

Owner and history

THE domaine Kanonkop Wine Estate has been owned and managed by the Krige family for several generations. They are passionate about winemaking and committed to producing exceptional wines that reflect the authentic terroir of Stellenbosch. The family works closely with a team of talented winemakers and oenologists who share the same vision and dedication to quality. Their goal is to perpetuate the family tradition and continue producing wines that make South Africa proud.

Vinification and aging

The lingering effects of the drought of the previous three years were still visible in this vintage, despite more abundant rainfall during the season, resulting in a harvest
Smaller, but of high quality. Despite relatively low water stress, the cool weather contributed to the small berry size, and irrigation was less necessary during
this growing season.

Fermentation took place in open concrete vats at 28°C. The floating skins were manually pierced every 2 hours during fermentation. The juice was sealed after 3 days. Following malolactic fermentation, the wine was aged for 16 months in 225L Nevers oak barrels, composed of 80% new barrels and 20% second-fill barrels.
