Vinification and aging

The winemaking process for Vintage Port is meticulous and requires time-honored expertise. The grapes are trodden by foot in traditional lagares (small stone huts) to gently extract aromas and tannins. Fermentation is halted by the addition of grape brandy, which helps retain some of the grapes' natural sugars. The wine is then aged in oak casks for an unspecified period before bottling. This crucial step allows the wine to develop its complexity and finesse.
