The Au Bon Climat vineyard is situated on varied soils, primarily composed of clay and limestone, which impart a unique minerality to the wines. The region's Mediterranean climate, with sunny days and cool nights, promotes optimal grape ripening. The carefully planted vines benefit from ideal sun exposure, allowing the grape varieties to fully flourish. The diversity of microclimates along the Santa Barbara Coast contributes to the aromatic richness of the wines, offering a true reflection of the Californian terroir.

    Owner and history

Jim Clendenen, the founder and visionary winemaker of Au Bon Climat, dedicated his career to exploring California's iconic grape varieties. Passionate about winemaking, he built a solid reputation through his artisanal approach. Today, the estate is managed with the same passion by a dedicated team that continues to innovate while respecting Clendenen's legacy. The current owners are committed to maintaining the standards of excellence for which Au Bon Climat is renowned, while exploring new avenues of creativity and respecting winemaking traditions.

    Vinification and aging

Winemaking at Domaine Au Bon Climat is a delicate process, blending tradition and innovation. The grapes are carefully hand-harvested and then sorted to guarantee exceptional quality. After gentle crushing, fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks, allowing for a gentle extraction of aromas. Aging in oak barrels, some of which are new, adds further complexity to the wine. This process respects the intrinsic characteristics of Pinot Noir, promoting the expression of the terroir. Each step is designed to enhance the fruit, resulting in wines of great finesse and depth.
