THE Château Mouton Rothschild 2020 is the latest addition to the celebrated and exceptional Bordeaux "trilogy" (2018, 2019, 2020). It is a wine that combines the classic power of Pauillac with sculptural precision, also marking the first vintage entirely overseen by Jean-Emmanuel Danjoy (former director of Clerc Milon).

He received stratospheric grades, often bordering on perfection: 99-100/100 (James Suckling) 98/100 (Decanter) and 100/100 (Green Wine).

Notes and pairings

Tasting notes

Pauillac lamb with garrigue herbs. It's the perfect "mirror image" pairing. The delicate flesh of the milk-fed lamb complements the silky texture of the mutton. The thyme and rosemary notes of the dish will echo the aromatic complexity (cedar, spices) of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Pair it with roasted Bordeaux ceps to highlight the earthy and noble character of the wine.

Producer

Producer

THE Château Mouton Rothschild is much more than a simple domaine wine-growing; it is a Bordeaux legend, marked by a strong family history and an inseparable link with art. La Baronne Philippine de Rothschild, modernized the domaine until his death in 2014. Today, his three children — Camille Sereys de Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild — jointly manage the property.

Owner and history

THEChâteau Mouton-Rothschild owns a 90-hectare vineyard in the heart of the Médoc. Its terroir of gravel, pebbles, and gravel retains the sun's heat. The wines are powerful, crafted for la garde. Only wine from the finest plots, the oldest vines, and the most exceptional vats is selected for the Grand Vin blend, and therefore deserves the name of Château Mouton Rothschild.

Vinification and aging

The 2020 winemaking process had to contend with a very high natural concentration due to a dry summer. The emphasis was placed on gentle extraction to obtain the sculptural and silky tannins that characterize this vintage, while preserving remarkable aromatic freshness despite the fruit's intensity.

It is this meticulous work that has allowed the 2020 to obtain historic scores, notably a 99-100/100 by James Suckling.

The team's opinion

This is a wine built for eternity. It will begin to reveal itself around 2030 and can be kept serenely until 2065+. If you are lucky enough to taste it young, decanting for 3 to 4 hours is essential to allow this "silk colossus" to express itself.
