While the Montagne de Reims is the undisputed kingdom of Pinot Noir, Hugues Godmé has isolated a plot of Chardonnay here, located in the Villers-Marmery terroir (classified 1er Cru). The Plot: "Les Alouettes" and "Saint Bets" are two contiguous localities. The soil there is very particular: an outcropping of chalk with very little topsoil, which forces the vine to draw its nutrients from deep underground. Exposure: Facing due East, this plot benefits from the rising sun, ideal for preserving the freshness and aromatic tension of the Chardonnay.

Owner and history

Hugues Godmé, now joined by his daughter Lucille, cultivates approximately 7.5 hectares spread across some forty plots. He is a discreet winemaker whose work is praised by the finest restaurants. Organic & Biodynamic Commitment: The domaine is certified Biodyvin and organic. Hugues Godmé began his conversion in 2006, convinced that healthy soil is the key to pure wine. The Terroir: His vineyards are mainly located in the villages Grand Cru from Verzenay (known for the power of its Pinot Noirs) and Verzy, as well as Villers-Marmery and Ville-Dommange. The Style: Its champagnes are characterized by great crystalline purity, vibrant energy, and very low dosages (often Brut Nature or Extra-BrutThe winemaking process is precise, without fining or filtration, allowing the wine to express itself in its purest form.

Vinification and aging

The 2011 vintage was atypical in Champagne (warm spring, cool and rainy summer). For meticulous winemakers like Hugues Godmé, this resulted in wines of great aromatic finesse and vibrant acidity, far removed from the sunny and opulent vintages.
