Located in the heart of Mendoza, in Argentina's most prestigious wine region, the Catena Zapata estate is a leading name in the New World. Founded in 1902, it is now recognized as a pioneer of high-altitude viticulture, with vines planted between 900 and 1,500 meters. Nicolás Catena, a visionary and fervent advocate for Argentine terroir, propelled his winery to the top through advanced scientific research and a constant pursuit of excellence. His wines, such as the eponymous Nicolás 2016, combine density, precision, and a rare balance, offering a modern interpretation of great high-altitude wines.

    Notes and pairings

    Tasting notes

Nicolás 2016 reveals a deep, dark robe with garnet highlights. The nose opens with concentrated notes of ripe black fruit, sweet spices, tobacco, and precious woods. On the palate, the attack is ample, the structure perfectly balanced, with firm yet silky tannins. The framework is harmonious, carried by a lovely freshness. The finish is long and elegant, marked by persistent notes of mocha, black cherry, and graphite.

    Food & wine pairings

This wine pairs perfectly with a grilled rib of beef, roast lamb, or a game dish in sauce.

The grapes for the Nicolás cuvée come exclusively from the oldest family vines, located in the Adrianna (Gualtallary) and Nicasia (Altamira) vineyards, two exceptional high-altitude terroirs with alluvial, calcareous, and gravelly soils. These extreme conditions, combined with significant temperature variations, give the wine remarkable tension and a concentration of aromas. The vineyard is managed using sustainable farming practices, respecting the soil and local biodiversity.

    Owner and history

The estate is now managed by Laura Catena, daughter of Nicolás Catena. A physician and oenologist, she carries on the family legacy with the same scientific rigor and a sustainable approach. Laura embodies the new generation of Argentine wine, combining innovation, terroir, and a commitment to quality. Her dedication to precision viticulture and research in extreme terroirs has made the estate a global benchmark, producing world-class wines true to their Andean origins.

    Vinification and aging

At the Catena Zapata estate, winemaking relies on rigorous plot selection and fermentation in small vats using indigenous yeasts. Each plot is vinified separately to preserve its unique character. For the 2016 Nicolás vintage, aging took place for 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels, 80% of which were new. This extended aging process imparts complexity, an elegant structure, and excellent aging potential.
